Participate

Welcome to a network of thousands of musicians around the world bringing free live music to their community on June 21st! We’ve put together some tips for matching up with a venue for Make Music Hartford.

  1. Determine how you’d like to participate
    • Will you perform one or more times during the day?
    • If you don’t want to perform on your own, check out jam sessions and play-alongs in our Spotlight Events list.
  2. Register and make sure your profile is attractive to venues
    • Include a description (one sentence probably won’t cut it). Let venues know who you are.
    • Include photos, videos, and sound recordings. They DO NOT have to be professional quality!
    • Everything you upload to your profile is visible to the public when the Make Music Hartford map goes live.
  3. Look for a venue.
    • Browse venue profiles and make requests.
    • Keep an eye on the times they have available, equipment they can/can’t provide, descriptions of the space and genres they’re interested in.
    • Most venues will NOT provide sound equipment. If a venue says they will provide PA, be sure to ask what that includes. Don’t forget to ask about extension cords!
    • Your request may get turned down. It happens. Try another venue.
    • If you plan to perform more than once, remember you need time for travel, setup and break down.
  4. Be on top of the follow up
    • Follow up with venues that do not respond to your requests. Send a message in the software.
    • Make sure your email notifications are turned on in the matchmaking software so you get email updates about your performance requests.
    • Be timely in your response if a venue requests a performance.
  5. Finalize your performance
    • In order to be added to the map and app, performances must be confirmed by the Venue, Musician, and City Administrator.
    • Talk with the venue(s) about your set up and break down needs. A quick conversation ahead of time can save a lot of headaches the day of the event.
    • Check in with the venue(s) the week of the event and make sure you’re both on the same page. Again, communication will help iron out potential hiccups.
  6. Tell the world you’re participating!
    • Venues, musicians, and the Make Music Hartford Team need to be involved in promotion in order for the event to be successful.
    • Share your participation and info about Make Music Hartford on social media.
    • Add information to your website and any other public calendar you use.
    • Word of mouth is still one of the most effective ways to let people know what’s going on.
