Mixed Instruments

Mass Appeal, part of Make Music Day, brings together thousands of musicians - of all levels and ages - to make music in large, single-instrument groups. The following free events, open to all, took place on June 21, 2016.

Make Music New York
49 Waltzes

As part of Make Music New York, Avant Media is celebrating summer in New York City with a city-wide waltz event for 49 Waltzes. On June 21st, in collaboration with C.F. Peters, we invite you to realize the music of John Cage at any of these sites: record yourself, and send us the video or audio. We'll post it along-side entries by artists from around the world, sharing their experience of New York City.

We've selected 3 waltzes to feature and will have a group meetup for Waltz 12.1 on the High Line at 21st Street at 8:30PM to record the sunset.

The selected spots for 2016 are: Waltz 8, Waltz 18, and Waltz 40
Of course, you're welcome to join in at any of the 147 addresses Cage selected. You can find the closest ones using our Waltz Finder here.

The score is simple: at any of the selected addresses, make a recording, this can be video or audio, any duration, as long as it’s made at the specific address. Upload this to YouTube, Vimeo, Soundcloud, Vine, or even Instagram and send the link, your name, and your website to submit[at]

While we encourage everyone to document their experience listening at the waltz, Cage's music is often realized by layering pieces on top of one another. We invite anyone, regardless of your musical background, to perform any of the following three John Cage pieces (or a piece of your choosing) at this location any time throughout the day.
