Mass Appeal, part of Make Music Day, brings together thousands of musicians - of all levels and ages - to make music in large, single-instrument groups. The following free events, open to all, will take place on June 21, 2019.
Platteville, Wisconsin can boast the largest “M” in the world while also being a venue, for Make Music Platteville on June 21, 2018. Nancy Fairchild, president of the local Make Music event, plans to have bucket drumming, a drum circle and junkyard percussion ensembles performing on the “M”. The “M” is written using whitewashed stones on Platte Mound about four miles east of Platteville. The letter is 241 feet high, 214 feet wide, with legs 25 feet wide. The history dates back to 1936 when two University of Wisconsin Platteville mining engineering students prompted the school to undertake this massive effort in creating the “M” out of local limestone. The “M” represents the Platteville Miners. Fairchild plans to have each of the 266 steps filled with participants playing various types of percussion instruments. West Music from Dubuque, Iowa will assist with leading the event, while the local Ace Hardware store is providing buckets for the drumming event. The Public Library is sponsoring a ‘make and take time’ where children can make a percussion instrument and bring it to the event.
