Mass Appeal

No instrument? No problem!

For the 12th year, Make Music Day 2020 features Mass Appeal, bringing together people of all levels and ages to make music in large, single-instrument groups.

Not quite music lessons, not quite jam sessions, Mass Appeals are a special kind of musical happening of their own. And anyone can take part – you don’t even need to bring an instrument!

This year we are excited to offer three Mass Appeals: The Heart Chant, Bucket Drumming, and Mass Appeal Harmonicas.

Instruments for this year’s Mass Appeals have been generously donated by Hohner and Vic Firth.

The Heart Chant

“Hearing is something that happens to us because we have ears—it is our primary sense organ. Listening is something we develop and cultivate our whole life, and maybe all of our lifetimes. Listening is what creates culture.”
– Pauline Oliveros

The global event will be 5pm Eastern Time on June 21st! REGISTER HERE!

The Heart Chant is a participatory Deep Listening meditation. Written in response to the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001, the Heart Chant is an offering of sonic healing for all beings through listening and vocalization.

Deep Listening is the life’s work of seminal composer Pauline Oliveros (1932-2016), which she describes as “listening all the time in every possible way to everything possible to hear.” Heart Chant‘s simple instructions invite anyone and everyone to participate, no musical training is required!

Last Make Music Day, nearly a dozen Heart Chants took place on three continents. This year, people anywhere in the world are invited to join in a virtual Heart Chant, hosted by Pauline’s widow IONE, Music on the Rebound, and members of the International Contemporary Ensemble. Tune in LIVE from your phone or computer to be a part of a uniquely powerful collective healing, that we need more than ever in this time of social distance.

The Heart Chant
By Pauline Oliveros

Stand together in a circle with feet about shoulder-width apart and knees a little soft.

Warm up your hands by rubbing palms together until you feel the heat.

Place your right hand over your own heart. Place your left hand on the back of your left hand partner (back of the heart).

After a few natural breaths sing/chant/intone “AH” on any pitch that will resonate your heart. Sense the energy of your own heart and that of your partner over the course of several breaths.

Can you imagine that the heart energies are joining together for healing yourself and others?

Can you imagine heart energies traveling out into the universe as a healing for all victims and toward the end of violence?

When The Heart Chant ends, gradually release your palms and bring them forward parallel in front of you. Sense the energy between the palms as if there were a sphere or ball that can be moved around. Then bring your palms to your own center, fold them over and store the energy.

Bucket Drumming

For the fourth year, The Vic Firth Company, setting the standard for percussion since its inception in 1963, is supporting bucket drumming Mass Appeals across dozens of cities for Make Music Day 2020.

All percussionists who attend – whether in person or virtually – will be provided with a pair of Vic Firth sticks in advance, and invited to make music together. The events will range from structured classes to free-flowing bucket drumming circles, according to the concept of each local organizer. The goal is to spread the message that to make music, all you need is a beat in your heart… and perhaps a pair of sticks.
