Make Music Day is an annual worldwide celebration dedicated to making, playing, listening, and sharing music. Held on June 21st each year, this daylong music festival is open to people of all ages and musical ability.

Since 2017, Nicholasville, Kentucky, has joined over 800 cities in 120 countries to celebrate Make Music Day by featuring a variety of free musical activities, live performances, and community gatherings that are open to anyone.

Participate

Make Music Day events are free and open to the public. From professional musician to someone who has never touched an instrument, Make Music Day welcomes anyone and everyone!

Make Music Day 2019

Children’s Instrument Workshop

Time: 10:30 AM – 11:15 AM

Location: Jessamine County Public Library, Meeting Rooms

Description:

Celebrate Make Music Day with our instrument making workshop and then play along in our concert. Children and their caregivers are invited to create homemade musical instruments. This program will culminate in a family concert during which everyone can play along.

No registration is required.

Project materials will be provided while supplies last.

Family Concert

Time: 11:30 AM – 12:15 PM

Location: Jessamine County Public Library, Meeting Rooms

Description:

Celebrate Make Music Day with a family concert.  Children and caregivers are invited to sing and play along with Evan and Vanessa in our Family Concert.  Bring your own instrument or make one in the instrument making workshop.

Evan and Vanessa are a bilingual Louisville-based children’s band with a background in Montessori education methods. They were recently named one of the “Best New Latin Kid’s Music Groups” by Billboard.com!

Drawing influences from the likes of Tiny Tim, Mr. Rogers, Charlie Chaplin, Shel Silverstein, Peter Paul and Mary, Roald Dahl, Shari Lewis, Hayao Miyazaki, and many other timeless entertainers and teachers, they have spent years crafting their special music and videos and are excited to finally release some of their work for all to see and hear.

Dancing Ring

Time: 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM

Location: YMCA Caroline Memorial Community Center

Description:

Celebrate Make Music Day with our dancing ring workshop. Families will make a ribbon ring and use them to dance as they learn a popular line dance. This activity provides hands-on learning that is also fun for the entire family. Each person will be able to take his or her ring home for continued fun.

Teen: Live Music

Time: 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Location: Jessamine County Public Library, Meeting Rooms

Description:

Rock out to the band When Autumn Calls! We guarantee you won’t be able to stop grooving to their beats, so come on out to cut loose. 

No registration is required.

Drum Circle

Time: 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM

Location: Rock Fence Park (Event will be moved to the Jessamine County Public Library in case of inclement weather)

Description:

Renowned percussionist Tripp Bratton will lead an all-ages drum circle. Handmade djembes and bucket drums with sticks will be provided so that up to 35 people will be able to play at once. If you have your own drum, feel free to bring it!  If people are waiting to play, we will rotate new drummers into the circle every 15 minutes.  Tripp will teach simple rhythms and talk a bit about djembes and African drumming. All are welcome.

Whistle & Fish Concert

Time: 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Location: Rock Fence Park (Event will be moved to the Jessamine County Public Library in case of inclement weather)

Description:

Join us for a concert in the park with Whistle & Fish. A band out of the Grayson and Olive Hill area, Whistle & Fish is an eclectic bluegrass, blues, jazz, swing, and country mash-up. With influences from fine instrumentalists such as Jens Kruger, Sam Bush, and Bryan Sutton, as well as songwriters such as John Prine, Mark Knopfler, Guy Clark, Tim O’Brien and many more, the band has crafted a unique sound with deep roots, a groovy feel, inspired original lyrics, cultural identity, and musical diversity.  
Bring your camp chair or a blanket and a picnic dinner. Refreshments will be available for purchase. This program is being co-sponsored by the Jessamine County Public Library and Jessamine County Tourism.
