Make Music Day is an annual worldwide celebration dedicated to making, playing, listening, and sharing music. Held on June 21st each year, this daylong music festival is open to people of all ages and musical ability.

Since 2017, Nicholasville, Kentucky, has joined over 800 cities in 120 countries to celebrate Make Music Day by featuring a variety of free musical activities, live performances, and community gatherings that are open to anyone.

Participate

Make Music Day events are free and open to the public. From professional musician to someone who has never touched an instrument, Make Music Day welcomes anyone and everyone!

Make Music Day 2018

Children’s Instrument Workshop

Time: 10:00 AM – 10:50 AM

Location: Jessamine County Public Library, Meeting Rooms

Description: Get Creative with music in this Make Music Day instrument making workshop.  Children and their caregivers are invited to create homemade musical instruments that they can then play at our Rachel Sumner concert following the workshop.

Project materials will be provided while supplies last.

Rachel Sumner Concert

Time: 11:00 AM – 11:50 AM

Location: Jessamine County Public Library, Meeting Rooms

Description: Explore instrument families and the science of sound with this lively performance. Rachel engages participants by incorporating zany instruments like the turkey baster, straw panpipes, tin can guitar, washboard, recycled percussion instruments and audience participation.

Recording Studio Demos

Time: Various time slots between 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM (Registration required; See description below)

Location: Jessamine County Public Library, Recording Studio

Description: Explore a demonstration of audio recording and editing with GarageBand.  You will learn how to add new tracks by selecting software instruments, vocal, electric guitar, or Drummer tracks.   Bring a USB to save your project.  Register for one of the following 30-minute time slots:

12:00-12:30 PM, 12:45-1:15 PM, 1:30-2:00 PM, 2:30-3 PM, 3:15-3:45 PM, 4:30-5 PM, 5:00-5:30 PM, 5:45-6:15 PM, 6:45-7:15 PM, 7:30-8:00 PM

Ukulele Sing & Play Along

Time: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

Location: J’s Place (Downtown Nicholasville)

Description: Join “Broom Temperature” for a fun hour of ukulele music.  The trio will bring ukuleles for the audience to try.

Harmonica Workshop

Time: 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Location: Jessamine County Public Library, Meeting Rooms

Description: Ever wondered what 50 harmonicas playing together sounds like? This is your chance to find out! JCPL will give away 50 harmonicas (1 per family on a first come basis until supplies run out).  Local musician and instructor Barry Stenulson will teach everyone to play a simple tune.

Open Drum Circle

Time: 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Location: Jessamine County Public Library, Meeting Rooms (changed due to weather forecast)

Description: Renowned percussionist Tripp Bratton will lead an all-ages drum circle. Handmade djembes and bucket drums with sticks will be provided so that up to 35 people will be able to play at once. If you have your own drum, feel free to bring it!  If people are waiting to play, we will rotate new drummers into the circle every 15 minutes.  Tripp will teach simple rhythms and talk a bit about djembes and African drumming.

Gail Wynters & Co. Jazz Concert

Time: 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM

Location: Jessamine County Public Library, Main Library (changed due to weather forecast)

Description: Gail Wynters has been performing jazz with some of the biggest names in the genre since the 1970s. Originally from Kentucky, she spent much of her career in New York City. Gail will be backed by three top-notch jazz musicians with equally impressive resumes.  Join us for this amazing opportunity to enjoy the finest jazz right here in Nicholasville.
