Join in the fun of making music and drop-in at one of the free, participatory Make Music San Jose events. These programs are open to all ages and skill levels. No experience necessary, but show up wanting to have fun!

Morning Participatory Events (6:00 am to noon)

108 Sun Salutations Yoga and Sound Healing
Where: Plaza de Cesar Chavez

When: 6:00 am – 7:30 am
What:   In honor of the Summer season, let’s join as a community and welcome the longest day of the year with intention and health in our body, mind, and spirits! We will be celebrating summer solstice with 108 rounds of Surya Namaskar led by various community members and sound healing  by Jessica Neideffer and Enrique Pedroza. The collective energy of which is meant to challenge the body and mind into a feeling of energetic community. This special practice will be held outside, in the cool sunshine of the early morning at Plaza De Cesar Chavez park! We will meet at the stage. Bring your own mat, we will have extras available though! This event is FREE to the public, sponsored by San Jose Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services.


Pianos in the Park
Where: Almaden Lake Park 5949 Winfield Blvd, San Jose, CA 95118
Vista Park 473 Hyde Park, San Jose, CA 95136
When: 8:30 am to 8:30 pm
What: Come out and play the piano in the park. A piano will be outside in both Almaden Lake Park and Vista Park all day long for visitors to play on a first come first serve basis. Pianos in the park is made possible with support from the Office of San Jose Councilmember Johnny Khamis.


Afternoon Participatory Events (noon to 5:00pm)

Harmonica Lessons with Mark “Fenny” Fenichel
Where: San Pedro Square Market

When: noon to 1:00 pm
What: Grab your co-workers and get out of the office for free harmonica lessons at San Pedro Square Market.  Local blues harmonica artist Mark “Fenny” Fenichel will give beginner harmonica tips and lead you in a harmonica jam. Hohner Harmonicas will provide free harmonicas to the first 75 participants.


Lunchtime Cumbia with Calafia Armada hosted by MACLA
Where: Parque de Los Pobladores 
510 S 1st St, San Jose, CA 95113
When: noon to 1:00 pm
What: Join Calafia Armada for rhythm and coro (singing) workshops, a jam session with the band (some instruments available to borrow), and a performance demonstration by members of the renowned band. Calafia Armada formed in 2016 in large part to study the roots of Cumbia in Afro-Mexican and Afro-Colombian folk music, embedding the folk-story of Queen Calafia in the rhythms and melodies that have been brought North to California. The lineup of musicians includes guitars, bass, trumpet, trombone, vocal harmonies, over a dozen different percussion instruments such as the tambora and the quijada, and even dancers. This special Make Music San Jose workshop is hosted by MACLA. A food truck will be on site. 


Make Music at the Mall
Where: Eastridge Center
2200 Eastridge Loop, San Jose, CA 95122
When: noon to 7:00 pm
What: Explore a variety of fun, free music-related activities taking place at Eastridge Center throughout the day including a Summer Runway Show hosted by Crystal Rosas of Wild 94.9, band tee screen-printing with HellaTees, instrument making crafts for kids, hip hop yoga, and, of course, musical performances by local acts. Drum Circle with Akoma Arts                  
Where: Roosevelt Park

When: 2:00pm to 5:00 pm
What:  Drum circle open to ALL levels of drummers hosted by West African drum and performance group Akoma Arts. Some drums provided.


Thump! Drum Circle
Where: Educational Park Branch Library
1772 Educational Park Drive, San Jose, CA 95133               
When: 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm
What: Join us for a fun hour of noise, rhythm and drums!  Drums will be provided by the library.


Evening Participatory Events (after 5:00 pm) 

Jam Session with School of Rock
Where: Vineland Library Branch
1450 Blossom Hill Rd, San Jose, CA 95118              
When: 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm
What: Jam session with School of Rock Band featuring Zildjian quiet cymbals and opportunities to join in the fun.


Awesome Orchestra Meet-Up
Where: Plaza de Cesar Chavez
1 Paseo De San Antonio, San Jose, CA 95113
When: 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm
What: Part performance, part open rehearsal, Awesome Orchestra sessions are open to all audiences and musicians.  This free, open, and diversely programmed San Jose session will feature music from “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, “Carmen”, and “Twin Peaks”.  Due to the popularity of the Awesöme Orchestra events, folks MUST sign up on the Awesöme Orchestra website to participate as a musician. Musician registration closes June 17.  The participation of the Awesöme Orchestra Collective in Make Music San Jose is made possible by the San Jose Downtown Association with support from the Knight Foundation.


Make Music with Viva Parks Neighborhoods
Where: Meadowfair Park 
Barberry Lane Corda Drive, San Jose, CA 95122
When: 6:00 pm to 10:30 pm (movie begins at 8:30 pm)
What: Come out with the kids and enjoy an interactive evening of music, games, and an outdoor film screening with the San Jose Jazz Boom Box featuring the Purple Fox and the Heebie Jeebies, Los Panadores, and Isaiah, along with an instrument petting zoo and sound painting activities. The San Jose Public Library Maker(Space) Ship will also be out with music-themed science experiments. This event is part of the San Jose Department of Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services summer series Viva Parks Neighborhoods and made possible with support from the Office of San Jose Councilmember Sylvia Arenas.
