MAKE MUSIC SEATTLE’S 5TH YEAR WENT INTERNATIONAL ON JUNE 21ST 2019!
2019 marked the first year of Make Music Seattle’s management by community radio station RainierAvenueRadio.World to help grow this local celebration of the worldwide holiday MAKE MUSIC DAY. Make Music Day provides opportunities to participate in and observe free live music performances at all-ages public venues across the city on the longest day of the year, June 21. Make Music Day launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique and is now held in 120 countries & over 1000 cities every Summer Solstice. Free. All Ages. Public. Music Making for Everyone!
Make Music Seattle 2019 organized 40+ events at over a dozen locations across Greater Seattle including music marathons (9 hours each location) at Westlake Park on 4th & Pine and under the Seattle Great Wheel on the Friends of Waterfront Seattle Pier 58, plus events in Columbia City, North Seattle, West and South Seattle, Bellevue and Lynnwood. Hundreds of performers and participants, and hundreds of observers enjoyed a diverse array of music activities and styles of performances.
There was a harmonica lesson with free harmonicas, an open music jam, youth singer-songwriters and Broadway-style dancers, plus performances including rock, jazz, Klezmer, a father/son rap duo, and reggae at Westlake Park in downtown Seattle.
The Waterfront HotSpot stage featured teen student performances, singer-songwriters, a Turkish band with a ballerina, a DJ competition and Ableton beatmaking demonstration, plus performances including soul, hard rock, and closing with a 9-piece ukulele orchestra.
Additional activities across the city included a songwriter showcase with a dozen performances, a rap battle, and a production class at RainierAvenueRadio.world studios and Crowdsource Choir in Columbia City; a youth showcase by Totem Star in West Seattle; featured music on the rooftop of the Liberty Bank Building, an all-ages jam at a venue in Georgetown, a performance outside of Planet Fitness in Rainier Beach, plus three Verity Credit Union branches hosted live music.
Make Music Seattle also promoted activities outside of the city, such as a day of workshops at MusicWorks NW in Bellevue, another songwriter showcase by Kennelly Keys and Songwriters in Seattle in Lynnwood.
We are also proud to have inspired the very first musical performance at Quincy Jones Square in Bremerton; and look forward to building that location as a partner of Make Music Seattle.
INTERNATIONAL VIDEO STREAMING
For the first time, the national Make Music Day Alliance collected live streams of #MakeMusicDay events from every continent except Antarctica… including Seattle.
Three Make Music Seattle events (Westlake Park, Waterfront HotSpot Stage, and RiseUp Music Project from the RainierAvenueRadio.World gallery in Columbia City) were live broadcast via audio on RainierAvenueRadio.world’s website and on the TuneIn app, and also live video streamed through their Facebook page and fed into the international stream site. Complete video clips can be found on the Make Music Seattle playlist at: https://www.facebook.com/pg/RainierAvenueRadio.World/videos/
The Make Music Alliance stated: “Thank you so much for being a part of the pilot Make Music Day international live stream! It was such a treat to be able to feature your stages. We had over 2,000 viewers throughout the day, mostly at our 20 watch parties around the US along with several hundred on YouTube. (In the community spirit of Make Music Day, we chose to emphasize watch parties). The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, people loved being able to connect with what was happening all over the world. We couldn’t have done it without you, thank you so much for all your hard work to contribute to it! With 20 successful watch parties that are looking forward to the next one, we’re confident we can greatly increase viewership next year, in the US and abroad.”
12 HOUR MAKE MUSIC ALLIANCE WORLDWIDE STREAM ON YOUTUBE
Make Music Seattle enjoyed partnerships with other entities such as Seattle Office of Arts and Culture, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, Downtown Seattle Association, Friends of Waterfront Seattle, American Music, Stealth Audio Puget Sound, KZ Music Media, KBFG 105.7 and Seattle Wave Radio, Northwest Music Scene, and Mode Music Studios. We were also able to promote two booths at Westlake Park and Waterfront HotSpot stages, including a non-profit music instrument collection organization and a rideshare service.
We also thank our dozens of volunteer supporters who assisted Make Music Seattle 2019 as MCs and Stage Managers, Sound Engineers, Videographers and Photographers, DJs and promoters.
