NYC Sacred Harp

Sacred Harp/Shape Note Singing is a traditional early American form of a cappella singing that invites audience participation.

Sacred Harp is an indigenous American form of a cappella community hymn singing, and comes from a tradition that dates back over 200 years. It is inclusive and participatory, and is open to all comers, regardless of musical ability. Likewise, although most of the song texts are derived from traditional Anglo-American hymnody, people of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome to participate. Sacred Harp is a great way for people from all walks of life to share in music-making, fellowship and spirituality; and its popularity has exploded in last 20 years. It is also invigorating to sing, at turns joyful and haunting to the ear, and stirring to the heart. Come sing with us!
