Blending Hindustani and Carnatic traditional music from the Indian subcontinent within the Raga and Taala improvisation framework
We play music from the Hindustani and Carnatic traditional music forms from the Indian subcontinent on vocals and instruments including the sitar, bansuri (Indian flute), and tabla (percussion). We use the concept of Raaga and Taala to develop an improvisational framework in the pieces we perform. Raaga provides us the framework for melodic improvisation while Taala for rhythm. Together we explore these concepts to present 'Raaga' that translates to a colouring of the mind, that evokes different emotional sentiments like happiness, introspection, devotion, and romance, and associations with nature such as the the time of the day, animals, and seasons.
