Make Music Western NY is a live, free musical celebration on June 21, the longest day of the year, with concerts on streets, sidewalks, and parks across the city.
Make Music Day is based on France’s Fête de la Musique, a national musical holiday inaugurated in 1982. The festival has become an international phenomenon celebrated in more than 800 cities in 110 countries, including Germany, Italy, Egypt, Syria, Morocco, Australia, Vietnam, Congo, Cameroon, Fiji, Colombia, Chile, Nepal, and Japan.
Make Music Western New York is an all day celebration of music! From rock & roll to reggae, hip-hop to opera, musicians of all ages and playing abilities put on hundreds of free concerts, jam sessions, and other exciting events in public spaces throughout the cities of Buffalo and Niagara Falls. All are welcome to participate- no experience necessary! Become part of a diverse community of musicians and join us in filling the streets and neighborhoods with music.

It’s easy to get involved!
Performers: create your profile by submitting a photo, description of your act, and any relevant website/social media links. Check out the available venues and bid on one that will fit your needs. The venue will confirm your request, and you’re good to go.
Venues: create a profile by submitting your location information and a description of the space. Peruse the musician profiles to request a performance, or welcome musicians to bid on your space independently. Confirm the connection and make sure your space is ready to go on June 21st.

BUFFALO, NY/ April 20, 2016/– This year’s Make Music Day celebration will take place on the summer solstice (June 21, 2016) as it has annually since 1982. This event is free and open to the public, and it has grown from its origins in France to include over 700 cities – including New York, Chicago, Boston, and Pittsburgh ‒ in 120 different countries. This year, Western New York is joining the festivities! Arts Services Initiative will galvanize groups of amateur and professional musicians and ensembles to perform from morning to night throughout the cities of Buffalo and Niagara Falls. The celebration will include more than 40 concerts and feature a diverse array of styles and sounds, from hymns to blues to classical to zydeco.
Arts Services Initiative invites any musician of any age or skill level to participate. Music lovers of all ages are invited to any of the free performances. Come and celebrate Western New York through a day of music- making!

It’s official. Buffalo is now taking a bigger role in the international event known as Make Music Day. Last year I wrote about the need for Buffalo to get involved with the day that is dedicated to the making of music (in any form). Shortly after, I received word from Arts Services Initiative (ASI) Executive Director Tod A. Kniazuk who let it be known that ASI was also interested in coordinating a city-wide annual event. Since that time, a plan has been solidified, which includes Niagara Falls in a regional one-day event that will celebrate all forms of live music. [read more]
