About

Make Music Day Albuquerque

Since 1982, Make Music Day has been held on June 21 as an international celebration of music. Launched in France as the Fête de la Musique, the City of Albuquerque joins more than 100 cities in 120 countries that all hold this annual event on the same day. In partnership with The American Federation of Musicians of the United States Local 618 and Mariposa Music, City of Albuquerque departments of Arts & Culture, Senior Affairs, and Family & Community Services are pitching in to join communities in Santa Fe, Las Cruces, and Gallup for a statewide celebration effort this year.

Completely different from a typical music festival, Make Music Day is open to anyone who wants to take part. Every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion — will have the opportunity to host, share, post, stream, and enjoy free events that are virtual or safely social distanced in accordance with public health orders.

Activities will include:

  • Window Serenades – Pop-up outdoor performances at City of Albuquerque Senior Centers and summer lunch sites to treat the public as well as celebrate our essential workers.
  • Wellness Hotel Performances – Pop-up outdoor performances at the City of Albuquerque Wellness Hotels that have provided temporary housing to our unhoused teen population throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • TV on the Radio – One Albuquerque Media will both air and livestream content from local venue partners for the public to view on the Public, Education and Government channels on the evening of June 21.

The Musicians Association of Albuquerque/Local 618 of the American Federation of Music

The American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada is the largest organization in the world dedicated to representing the interests of over 90,000 professional musicians who perform all styles of music—classical, pop, gospel, jazz, country, folk, rock/alternative rock, big band, reggae, contemporary Christian, etc. The AFM has been promoting and protecting professional musicians for over 110 years (be that a nightclub, a symphony stage, in a recording studio, or on tour). The AFM protects the recorded works musicians produce from being exploited, and protect our members live performances by providing several types of benefit programs that help them to build successful careers. The Musicians Association of Albuquerque/Local 618 of the AFM (originally The Musicians Protective Union) has been serving New Mexico area musicians since our charter on July 23, 1915, and we continue to be an effective advocate for musician’s rights in the workplace. We represent the musicians of the. New Mexico Philharmonic, Santa Fe Symphony, Santa Fe Opera, and as of May 2021 the El Paso Symphony orchestra, as well as many of the finest professional freelance musicians in the Land of Enchantment.

Members of Local 618 of the AFM are secure in knowing that their organization is actively lobbying to promote legislation and public awareness that protects musician’s interests, negotiating collective bargaining agreements with symphonic orchestras, the recording industry, motion picture industry, jingle industry, TV networks, National Public TV and Radio, and providing excellent wages and working conditions for its members.

We are proud to partner with the Make Music Day Alliance and the Music Performance Trust Fund to bring live music to Albuquerque and El Paso on June 21, 2021.
