Make Music Auburn CA

Make Music Auburn CA

Each year, over 1,000 cities around the world throw citywide music celebrations on June 21.

It all started 42 years ago in France.

In 1982, France’s Ministry of Culture dreamed up an idea for a new kind of musical holiday. They imagined a day where free, live music would be everywhere: street corners and parks, rooftops and gardens, store fronts and mountaintops.

And, unlike a typical music festival, anyone and everyone would be invited to join and play music, or host performances on summer solstice, June 21. This year marks Auburn’s third year as part of this worldwide celebration!

Why participate in Make Music Day?

Make Music Day offers an opportunity for musicians of all ages and abilities to perform. It allows emerging artists an opportunity to shares their music, and gives established artists the opportunity to inspire the next generation. It’s a celebration of all the ways that music can enrich our lives by giving musicians a way to express their passion, effort, and message

How do I explain this concept most accurately?
First off, thanks for being so excited that you want to help promote. To keep things simple, you might describe Make Music Auburn in this way: Make Music Auburn is a local, volunteer-run extension of an International DIY Music Festival. Through a match-making portal, both locations wanting to host and performers (of any skill level/genre/age group) wanting to do their thing for an audience can create a profile. Venues can request particular performers, musicians can request particular venues…and when the City Admin blesses the union, it’s “go time.” There are 3 rules to Make Music Day:
  1. Always June 21.
  2. Always Free to the Public.
  3. Always MUSIC!
How do I see who is playing?

Visit the “Listings” tab on the main page menu. When you click, you’ll see an interactive map showing locations and scheduled performers. You can view by map, or filter by venue or performer. You can also click on the headings for Artists or Locations to see the various artists or locations have been matched. As new venues and artists sign up, this page will update relatively in real-time.

Where did the idea come from?

Make Music Auburn is inspired by France’s “Fête de la Musique,” a national musical holiday inaugurated in 1982. Ever since, the festival has become an international phenomenon, celebrated on the same day in more than 750 cities in 120 countries. In North America, over eighty June 21st celebrations are listed on the Make Music Day website.

Can I register multiple locations or performers to participate in Make Music Auburn?

Absolutely! You are welcome to create multiple Performer profiles if you are playing in more than one ensemble – create a profile for each one. If you are a venue that would like to host concerts in more than one location, then you can create multiple Venue profiles. Just be certain to create a separate profile for each location, so that each one can be officially matched in our database.

I have a location to offer. Now what?

As performers begin to sign up, you can request to be matched with them and vice versa. Once you’re matched, the Auburn CA Admin reviews to make sure that all is well.

When the Admin approves the pairing, you (the venue) will communicate with your confirmed performers to give them whatever details you have. Email if you have any specific questions about this!

JUNE 14, 2023 is the last day to sign up.

Do the performers get paid?

Make Music Day is not a paying gig, but tips are allowed! The ethos of the festival is to celebrate the  talents of  musicians of all levels and to activate outdoor spaces.

A sign with your VenMo or PayPal info can be displayed during the performance, and venues may provide tip jars. (Though you are always welcome to bring your OWN self-styled tip jar for cash tips).

You’ll be able to request a slot at a published location. If there aren’t very many available when you first sign up, check back. We all know Auburn is about deciding last minute. Venues may reach out to request you perform. You can approve or decline.

Auburn CA Admin will have final approval on pairings of venue and performer, just to ensure no one performance interferes with the audio of another one nearby.

The venue will reach out to you directly to communicate details. You can also email them and introduce yourself!
