Make Music Boston 2018 Anchor Performances

In addition to having over 300 musicians registered to perform on Boston’s streets, parks and plazas this June, Make Music Boston partners with local artists, venues and organizations to present four special anchor performances each year.
These anchor performances lay the groundwork for the entire festival, and we’ve been working hard to hammer down the details of each one.
This year, we’re hosting a teen-produced showcase of youth musicians, a colorful, interactive graphic score showcase, a site-specific environmental piece inspired by the Charles River and Handel’s “Water Music” and an interactive bell performance inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s “Bells, Bells, Bells.”
Converge // 5pm-8pm // Magazine Beach
Converge Arts Boston in collaboration with Mattapan Teen Center, Cambridge Arts Center, and Cambridge Community Center will present a teen – produced showcase of youth musicians, for which students will take on performance, design, and production roles, along with the guidance and support of Make Music Boston and Converge Arts. The program will empower teens from Mattapan and Cambridge to take on leadership roles, and develop technical skills while working together towards a shared goal. The event will also feature lawn games, visual art-making activities, and improvised acoustic performances.

Water Music // 7:30pm-9:30pm // Esplanade
A site-specific, environmental work, Water Music at Make Music Boston is inspired by the Charles River and Handel’s famous piece “Water Music.” Four Boston-area composers will be commissioned to create a piece for 50 brass players and singers. The performers will be placed along the Esplanade walkway, and the new works will be performed at sunset on the Summer Solstice. Listeners will each create their own experience by walking within and around the performers themselves.

Crayon Box // 2pm-4:30pm // Dudley Cafe
Crayon Box will give participants a chance to write their own graphic scores, see them projected in real time, and perform/listen a trio play their piece. The Crayon Box station will be complete with two digital tablets where participants can make their own graphic score based on a color – violet, blue, green, red, yellow, orange, black or brown. These digital scores will be displayed on a screen that will in front of the Dudley Café outdoor wall. A trio made up of voice, bass and sax will perform participants’ scores and a digital artist will be there to help visualize the scores.

Ring A Bell // 5pm-6pm // Edgar Allan Poe Statue at the intersection of Boylston and Charles St. adjacent to Boston Common
Inspired by “Bells, Bells, Bells” By Edgar Allan Poe. Ring A Bell explores memories and our associations with the sound of a bell. The ensemble will work with listeners to create a piece with the audience by distributing 50 bells to passersby and attendees. Unfolding in in three phases, the performance will culminate in a performance by the audience of 50+ lead by the Thread Ensemble.
