Make Music is a free celebration of music around the world on June 21st. This year in 2021 the format has changed to a “virtual celebration” with online streaming, but the SPIRIT of community participation for all remains the same. Completely different from a typical music festival, Make Music is open to anyone who wants to take part. Every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional, of every musical persuasion — pours onto streets, parks, plazas, and porches to share their music with friends, neighbors, and strangers. All of it is free and open to the public.
Make Music Day is now celebrated on June 21 in over 1000 cities in 120 countries around the world!
It all started 35 years ago in France.
In 1982, Jack Lang and his staff at the Ministry of Culture dreamed up an idea for a new kind of musical holiday. They imagined a day where free, live music would be everywhere: street corners and parks, rooftops and gardens, store fronts and mountaintops. Unlike a typical music festival, anyone and everyone would be invited to join and play music, or host performances. The event would take place on the summer solstice, June 21, and would be called Fête De La Musique. (In French, the name means both “festival of music” and “make music!”) Amazingly enough, this dream has come true.
Three decades later, the holiday has spread throughout the world and is now celebrated in more than 120 countries and over 1000 cities.
Make Music Davis – On June 21st, 2017, Davis, CA joined the global celebration of music for the first time and will continue for its fourth year in 2020. We thank the good folks at The Davis Dirt for their stellar organization skills 2017 – 2019. Now in 2021 we at Davis Media Access and KDRT 95.7 FM community radio will take it on using social distancing and a virtual celebration in keeping with the current COVID-19 guidelines. All are welcome and encouraged to help fill the air with music!

The Make Music Davis – DIMI Showcase 2021 highlights five emerging local young musicians/bands from the Davis Independent Music Initiative (DIMI) project recorded by Davis Media Access at the City of Davis Veterans Memorial Theatre.
These original works/performances vary from improvisation jazz guitar, to spoken word narrative, to vintage psychedelic guitar compositions, to pop and alternative rock/punk.
The June 21st KDRT 95.7 FM special broadcast continues from 11 AM – 1 PM airing special extended live recordings of performances from Davis Independent Music Initiative (DIMI) 2021 Award winner Boca do Rio, and from multi-SAMMIE Award winners The Nickel Slots. We will also be featuring some highlight performances from the well-loved Thursday Live! community concert series recorded live from Davis Odd Fellows Hall.
