About

June 21, 2024 marks the return of Make Music Detroit!

Inspired by France’s Fête de la Musique (a national music party day inaugurated in 1982), Make Music Day takes place on the same day in more than 1,000 cities across the globe, from Boston to Berlin to Beijing.

This year, Detroit joins the party! On June 21, Detroiters from Bricktown to Banglatown will let their music take over the city. With performances from individual amateurs to world-class ensembles, Make Music Detroit will show off our city’s unequaled musical heritage, and the power of music to bring neighbors together in harmony.

Make Music Detroit is coordinated by a growing consortium of partners including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Arts, Culture, & Entrepreneurship, Detroit Parks Coalition, Downtown Detroit Partnership, and Wayne State University. The event first came to Detroit as a volunteer-led initiative in 2016 and 2017.

Make Music Detroit is sponsored by HARMAN International, an audio and automotive electronics technology company which has been celebrating Make Music Day every year since 2015 in Metro Detroit, at their North American Automotive Headquarters in Novi, Mich.

All Make Music Detroit events are:

  • Free (no tickets, musicians and audience members are not charged)
  • Participatory (open to any musician at any level who wish to participate)
  • All ages with genre restrictions
  • At multiple locations
  • On June 21st

Mission – Make Music Detroit is not just about performing and sharing live music, but finding connection, community, and new opportunities through performed music. Whether you are a performer or an attendee, the objective of this city-wide event is to foster community growth through musical events and expose different types of musical performances to new audiences.
