Manhattan Samba

Manhattan Samba, the New York region’s original and longest performing bateria, was founded in 1990 by master percussionist, Ivo Araujo, a native Carioca, who grew up in the heart of Rio de Janeiro and the favelas, where he performed with and taught at Rio’s top Samba schools. Manhattan Samba is international and multigenerational with band members from Brazil, Central &South America, the Caribbean, Europe, Japan and the U.S., all trained by Ivo Araujo in weekly samba percussion classes. Performing with 15-35+ drummers and, with the Manhattan Samba dancers - dressed in traditional Rio Carnival outfits - Manhattan Samba is the only samba band (bateria) in the NE region that brings to life the swinging, exuberant, focused, high energy rhythms and passions of the legendary samba schools, as performed at Rio’s world famous Carnival. Time Out Magazine alliteratively singled out Manhattan Samba the bateria that “…bombards your brain and booty with a battery of bumpin’ batuca beats!"
