Make Music Boston Anchor Performances

In addition to having over 300 musicians registered to perform on Boston’s streets, parks and plazas, Make Music Boston partners with local artists, venues and organizations to present four special anchor performances each year. 

These anchor performances lay the groundwork for the entire festival, and we’ve been working hard hammering down the details of each one. So, here they are:

Commuter Shake // 8:30-9am // Downtown Crossing
To kick off the day, the first 300 commuters passing through Downtown Crossing can pick up a free egg shaker while listening to the interactive improvised music of Thread Ensemble.

Young Artist Showcase // 11am-2pm // Copley Square
The Showcase will feature the talents of junior high and high school musicians from the area—funk bands, Motown, percussion ensembles, choirs, a ska band, and more. Led by Tom Westmoreland, of Lynnfield High School, and co-founder of the Innovations Committee of the Massachusetts Music Educators Association.  

Lift Every Voice: Musicians Rising For Racial Justice // 5-7pm // Copley Square
Presented by Play for Justice collective. Lift Every Voice will feature 100+ musicians and singers performing Barber’s Adagio for Strings, George Walker’s Lyric for Strings and civil rights protest songs. Chicago and Cleveland will raise their voices together with Boston and feature similar programming at their respective Make Music Day festivals.

Opensound: John Cage in the Park // 6:30-8pm // Davis Square
Opensound presents a 100-person performance of John Cage’s Variations III. Performers will be situated in Statue Park behind the Davis Square stop on the MBTA Red Line, and audience members can wander in and out of the created soundscape.
